Taking Shrek Digital

(May 22, 2001 - by Shrek's digital presentation in 11 theaters nationwide was made possible by the THX Division of Lucasfilm. Shrek is the first DreamWorks movie to ever have a digital release.

Drawing upon its years of experience in digital mastering and film presentation, THX managed the entire digital cinema process, from supervising the creation of the compressed digital master, to performing all on-site technical preparations. Currently, Shrek is being projected digitally in 11 theatres nationwide and in Canada. THX technicians carefully downloaded the masters to the hard drive for projection, and technically aligned each theatre to optimize the sound systems and ensure that operation of the digital projectors met THX criteria. THX technicians are on site for each initial digital presentation. THX has delivered other features for digital cinema theatrical release, including Star Wars: Episode I, Titan A.E. and Akira.

"DreamWorks has always relied on THX's superior quality control for 35mm printing and projection. As we move forward with digital projection, THX was the natural choice for ensuring that moviegoers get the best possible theatrical presentation," said Mark Christiansen, Head of Operations, Theatrical Distribution for DreamWorks Pictures.
