ShrekShrek Wins Showing at Cannes!
(by digitalmediafx.com) In what is considered a major boost for DreamWorks, its newest animated film, Shrek, has been accepted to be shown at the prestigious International Cannes event. Digital Media FX reported on Tuesday that Shrek was being seriously considered by Cannes as a film that contributes "to the progress of the motion picture arts and to encourage the development of the film industry throughout the world" - a requirement to be shown at Cannes.

What makes the showing more impressive is that Shrek is the first animated film since Walt Disney’s 1953 Peter Pan to receive a prestigious showing at Cannes.

According to the New York Times, "Shrek has been made with computer technology that is being hailed within the industry as the most advanced yet. Thousands of characters have been created with heightened realism. The film has taken more than 275 artists, computer animators, software developers and engineers almost three years to make."

While DreamWorks is credited with the film, it was actually DreamWorks subsidiary, PDI, which did the animating for the movie.

ABC Announces Airing of Tarzan - Includes HDTV Transmission!
(by digitalmediafx.com) On April 4, Digital Media FX announced that ABC would be televisingTarzan on April 29. Yesterday, ABC released an official press announcement on the airing of Tarzan. The announcement is published, as provided by ABC, directly below:

Tarzan, the Academy Award-winning animated film (Best Song, Phil Collins' "You'll Be in My Heart"), is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic story of an orphaned baby boy raised by apes in the African jungle. Tarzan makes its network television debut in HDTV format and 5.1-channel surround sound as a presentation of "The Wonderful World of Disney," SUNDAY, APRIL 29 (7:00-9:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Tarzan knows nothing of his human relatives. His friends are Terk, a playful young gorilla, and Tantor, an easily frightened elephant, who don't mind that he's different from all of the other animals in the jungle. But Kerchak, the silverback who heads the gorilla family group, refuses to accept him as a son, which makes Tarzan resolve to be the best ape ever. Eventually, however, a trio of explorers discovers him. Professor Porter and his daughter, Jane, seek only to broaden their zoological knowledge, but their guide, Clayton, has more lucrative plans in mind.

Kerchak forbids Tarzan to introduce the humans to his gorilla family, but the threat of losing Jane just as their love begins to blossom entices him to disobey. Tarzan must decide whether to remain with his gorilla family or return with Jane and the others and live his life as a human.

The film's outstanding voice cast includes Glenn Close ("Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific," "102 Dalmatians"), Minnie Driver ("Good Will Hunting," "Return to Me"), Rosie O'Donnell ("The Flintstones"), Tony Goldwyn ("The 6th Day," "Ghost"), Nigel Hawthorne ("The Winslow Boy"), Wayne Knight ("3rd Rock from the Sun," "Jurassic Park") and Lance Henriksen ("Scream 3").

The 1999 animated film was directed by Chris Buck and Kevin Lima ("102 Dalmatians") from the screenplay by Tab Murphy ("Gorillas in the Mist") and Bob Tzudiker ("Anastasia," "102 Dalmatians") & Noni White ("Anastasia," "102 Dalmatians"), based on Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "Tarzan of the Apes." The film is a production of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., and Walt Disney Productions. (CLOSED-CAPTIONED)

This film carries a TV-PG,V parental guideline.

"TARZAN" IN HDTV: The ABC Television Network's HDTV broadcast of Tarzan will air in 720 Progressive (720P), ABC's selected HDTV format, with 5.1-channel surround sound.

News Link of the Day - Where Comics Are No Laughing Matter

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

This year WonderCon celebrates its 15th anniversary with guests from Batman, MAD magazine, The Matrix and The Simpsons. Oh, and a Pulitzer Prize winner, too..."
