Shrek Milestones Monsters, Inc. Milestones

May 28, 2001 - Shrek has overtaken Chicken Run as the highest grossing non-Disney animated movie of all time. It achieved this on Monday, May 28, 2001 when it topped Chicken Run's $106.8 million.

June 3, 2001 - Shrek broke into the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list, catapulting to #8 in a single day.

June 4, 2001 - Shrek reached $150 million quicker than any other past animated film.

June 8, 2001 - Shrek expands into 3,715 theaters, breaking the old record of theaters playing the same movie (Mission Impossible II in 3,669 theaters).

June 8, 2001 - Shrek overtakes A Bugs Life in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list, moving to #7.

June 10, 2001 - Shrek overtakes Tarzan in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list, moving to #6.

June 12, 2001 - Shrek overtakes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list, moving to #5.

June 19, 2001 - Shrek surpasses the $200 million mark at the box office, becoming only the fourth animated movie to reach that level (not counting for inflation).

June 26, 2001 - Shrek dethrones Aladdin in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list, moving to #3.

July 14, 2001 - Shrek moves into the #2 spot by surpassing Toy Story 2 in the Top 10 Highest Grossing Animated Films list.

December 7, 2001 - On Day 36 in the Monsters, Inc. versus Shrek box office comparison, Shrek finally overtakes Monsters, Inc. in grand total erasing what was once a greater than $20 million lead for Monsters, Inc. (look at the difference between the two movies on Day #9).

 

November 5, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. had the biggest three day opening ever of any past animated film and the biggest opening ever for a Disney movie. It made $62.6 million in its first three days of release.

November 5, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. entered the Top 10 Animated Openings of all Time list at the #1 spot.

November 10, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. reached the $100 million mark quicker than any other past animated film, including Shrek.

November 17, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. entered the Top 10 Animated Films of all Time list.

November 23, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. leaps past Tarzan and Snow White in one day to the #6 spot in the Top 10 Animated Films of all Time list.

November 25, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. overtakes Pixar's first animated feature, Toy Story, to #5 on the Top 10 Animated Films of all Time list.

December 1, 2001 - Monsters, Inc. became only the fifth animated movie to ever reach the $200 million mark at the box office. This is the quickest an animated movie has ever reached the $200 million mark.
