Cinematrix II
(May
8, 2001) Heavy Light Digital, a Manhattan-based digital post-production
house specializing in composite cinematography and digital effects,
has designed the Cinematrix II, a unique digital video to film
recording system.
Digital video
technology is rapidly changing the landscape of film production;
giving filmmakers affordable, professional equipment that produces
high resolution images without the constraints of traditional
filmmaking techniques. Films like Lars von Treir's Dancer in the
Dark and Miguel Areta's Chuck & Buck, point to the growing
trend in major release productions shot on digital video. Keeping
pace with this latest evolution in film production, Heavy Light
Digital has been a pioneer in the development of sophisticated
post-production techniques that provide the highest quality results
when transferring digital video formats to film.
Created last
year, the Cinematrix II was specifically engineered to handle
the complex nature of digital video to film transfers. Heavy Light
Digital's system integrates "superior" optics, imaging
electronics, and software algorithms which result in a product
that possesses the organic colors, extended contrast, and flowing
motion that is expected from film. The facility is equipped to
transfer NTSC and PAL digital video formats (miniDV, DVCAM, Beta
SP, Digi Beta, Hi-Def) to film (35mm, Super 16mm, 16mm).
While the
technology is essential to the trainer process, the Heavy Light
Digital staff maintains a philosophy of working closely with their
clients to give them the creative access and guidance they need
to make the best film possible.
"In blowing
my DV feature up to 35mm, I felt very lucky to be working with
Tom Edmon and the crew at Heavy Light," says Kate Davis,
a recent client and Grand Jury Prize winner at this year's Sundance
Film Festival for her documentary Southern Comfort. "They
really threw themselves into the job, working at getting the motion
shots as smooth as possible and tweaking the color balance."
Heavy Light
Digital was established in 1996 by film industry veterans Tom
Edmon and Robert Luttrell. Together they bring over 50 years of
commercial production and post-production experience to their
cinemagraphic enterprise. Edmon has designed special effects for
films such as Star Wars, Superman, and Aliens.
