William
Hanna Passes Away
(by digitalmediafx.com) William Hanna passed away on Thursday
at his home in North Hollywood. He was 90 years old. Hanna and
Joseph Barbera together founded Hanna-Barbera Studios and were
famous for their cartoon creations like The Flintstones, Tom &
Jerry, The Jetsons, and Yogi Bear.
Hanna started
cartooning in the early 1930s, leaving an engineering career
to pursue his passion. In the late 1930s he hooked up with
Barbera and in 1957 they formed Hanna-Barbera Studios, now owned
by Warner Bros. Warner Bros. held a special 90th birthday celebration
for Hanna on July 16, 2000.
In 1960, Hanna
and Barberas cartoon, Huckleberry Hound and Friends, became
the first animated series to ever win an Emmy Award. In total
the team of Hanna-Barbera won eight Emmys.
Hanna continued
to work well into his 80s. He was the executive producer
for Once Upon a Forest, a 1993 animated musical from Fox Family.
In addition he directed two ABC specials in the 90s called
I Yabba-Dabba-Doo and Hollyrock-A-Bye Baby.
Hanna is respected
by animators and animation enthusiasts across the world and will
be dearly missed.

Disney's
Atlantis Receives a "PG" Rating - Osmosis
Release Date Changed
(by digitalmediafx.com) Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire
has received a PG rating by the Motion Picture Association of
America for "action violence." This means that over
the summer months there will be four straight animated films hitting
theaters rated PG or PG-13 (Shrek, Atlantis, Final Fantasy,
and Osmosis Jones).
In other animated
movie news, Warner Bros. has moved the release of Osmosis Jones
back a week so that it doesn't compete with Rush Hour 2
and The Princess Diaries. The new August 10 release date
will now put it in direct competition with American Pie 2,
Curse of the Jade Scorpion, and Jay & Silent Bob Strike
Back.

Frank and
Ollie Win "Friz" Award
(by digitalmediafx.com) Having a hard time keeping up with
all the award ceremonies these days? In the most recent announcement,
famous Disney animation pioneers Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston
have won a "Friz" award, presented by the Santa Clarita
International Film Festival.
Frank and
Ollie were introduced by a short video narrated by top contemporary
Disney animator Glen Keane that detailed their storied animation
career and creative partnership at the children's picture powerhouse.
During the awards ceremony, Frank and Ollie shared a microphone,
realting tidbits from their 40 years at Disney.

According to CNN:
"Animation
pioneer William Hanna, who with partner Joseph Barbera created
such beloved cartoon characters as Fred Flintstone, Yogi Bear
and Tom and Jerry, died Thursday. He was 90.
Hanna died
at his North Hollywood home with Violet, his wife of 65 years,
at his side, said Sarah Carragher, a spokeswoman for Warner Bros.,
which owns Hanna-Barbera Studios. She said he had been in declining
health for the last few years..."
