Osmosis Jones Given PG-13 Rating
(by digitalmediafx.com) Osmosis Jones has been given a PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America. The rating was given due to "crude language and humor." Like Monkey Bone and Titan A.E., Osmosis Jones may face an identity crisis when it hits theaters on August 3, 2001.

August 3 is approximately the same time that The Iron Giant was released into theaters two years ago to disappointing box office results. Despite the names associated with Osmosis Jones, the film appears set for failure due to the appearance that it is a kids movie (when it is not), the PG-13 rating (which will keep away families), and the competition. On August 3, Disney is releasing a movie called Bubble Boy (which will take the family audiences) and Rush Hour 2 is also being released (which will take the comedy and action crowds). Further complicating the movie's chance of success is that it appears aimed at the same audience as Titan AE, which showed little interest in seeing animated productions.

Osmosis Jones is being set up to possibly become the box office disaster of the summer.

Casper to Get a New Home
(by digitalmediafx.com) Casper, Richie Rich, Baby Huey, and other famous classic cartoon characters are about to get a new home. The Harvey Entertainment Company, which owns the rights to the characters, is about to sell those rights to Classic Media, LLC, a company that acquires and manages entertainment properties.

The deal is estimated at $16 million in addition to the handling of certain liabilities. The deal is expected to be completed once shareholders vote on the acquisition.

This isn't the first time that Harvey Entertainment and Classic Media have tried to strike a deal. In August of 2000, the two tried to strike a similar deal worth $26 million (via stock investments). However, in November it was announced that the deal had been terminated, "due to the parties' inability to reach agreement on definitive documentation."

Harvey Entertainment's Chairman of the Board of Directors has expressed regret over having to sell the characters, but says that financial conditions of the company required the move. Harvey's stock has gone from a high of $6 a share on March 29, 2001 to a low of .06 cents on December 29, 2000. The stock has recently been trading around the .15 cent level (HRVY.OB).

News Link of the Day - CTV Cartoon Series a Poor Second Choice

According to The Ottawa Citizen:

"With little more than two months until the end of the season, CTV will finally unveil its second new prime-time Canadian series of the year. It's a half-hour family cartoon called Committed and it launches Saturday at 7 p.m.

Committed seems an unlikely piece of Canadiana. It is based on a daily, single-panel syndicated cartoon produced by a Texas doodler named Mike Fry. The cartoon is almost unknown in Canada, where no more than 12 newspapers carry it, most of them in small markets..."
