New Hayao Miyazaki Movie Takes Japan by Storm
(by digitalmediafx.com) Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi ("Spirited Away"), the newest anime production from one of Japan's most famous anime directors, Hayao Miyazaki, opened last weekend in Japan to huge numbers. In its opening weekend, the movie drew well over a million people who dished out a total of 1.63 billion yen ($15.8 million) to see it. Both exceed the record opening numbers set by Miyazaki's 1997 masterpiece, Mononoke Hime (renamed to Princess Mononoke for U.S. audiences). The movie is being distributed by Toho Co in Japan.

Jurassic Park 3 Continues to Rack in Big Bucks
(by digitalmediafx.com) Even during weekdays, Jurassic Park 3 is proving to be a huge performer at the box office. On Monday, the third installment in the Jurassic Park series made nearly $6 million domestically to bring its box office total to $87 million. The film is expected to pass the $100 million mark by this Friday.

Nickelodeon and Nelvana Expand Working Relationship
(by digitalmediafx.com) Nickelodeon and Nelvana have expanded their working relationship by Nickelodeon agreeing to license Nelvana the international distribution rights to Nickelodeon series, Taina's World (live action) and The Fairly Odd Parents (animated). In addition, Nickelodeon has agreed to co-produce a minimum of one new animated series with Nelvana.

The Fairly Odd Parents, created by Butch Hartman, is Nickelodeon's newest animated series that follows the misadventures of 10-year old Timmy Turner who has strange Fair Godparents that are rather whacky. There is no news yet on what the new animated series will be that the companies have agreed to do together.

Nelvana is the animation division of Canadian-based Corus Entertainment, Inc.

News Link of the Day - EA Wins Tolkien Movie Rights

According to The Red Herring:

"Gearing up for competition over one of the most valuable entertainment licenses available today, Electronic Arts (EA) is expected to announce Wednesday that it has acquired the rights to make games based on New Line Cinema's upcoming Lord of the Rings trilogy of films.

New Line Cinema reignited the craze for the works of novelist J.R.R. Tolkien with its highly anticipated Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, set for December release..."
