Sony Imageworks has Sights Set on Pixar
12-12-2001

(by digitalmediafx.com) Pixar's mega success in the animation business has caught the eye of Sony, which is transforming its FX house, Sony Imageworks, into a CGI animation movie facility. Its first project, called Astroboy, is planned for a 2004 release.

According to Daily Variety, "The story follows a permanently youthful robot boy modeled after the deceased son of a research scientist. Originally intended to be kept a secret, the Pinocchio like character becomes a renowned superhero -- complete with devices like laser-firing fingers, uncanny hearing and jet-powered boots -- all eventually used to repulse an alien invasion of Earth."

A Japanese comic book and popular TV series in Japan and Canada, are the inspiration behind the Astroboy movie, which will be helmed by Eric Leighton and written by Todd Alcott and Ken Kaufman.

Sony was reportedly trying to sell Sony Imageworks without success and, according to Daily Variety, transformed it into a CGI animation movie facility (for Astroboy) after seeing impressive FX footage for Stuart Little 2
