Square Pictures For Sale

(by digitalmediafx.com) After laying off dozens of animators, seeing the president of its parent company resign, and shutting down several future projects, Square Pictures has been put up for sale. Square Pictures spent over $135 million and four years creating its first animated feature film, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, only to see it bomb at the box office. The poor performance of Final Fantasy resulted in future projects by Square Pictures being put on hold and led to the resignation of Square president Hisashi Suzuki last month.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within did a poor job at creating the magic that video game users love about the Final Fantasy video games. In addition, the photorealistic animated movie was rated PG-13, missing out on family audiences. Square Pictures once had ambitions at becoming the "Pixar of Japan."
