Waking
Life Given "R" Rating
(by digitalmediafx.com) The unique rotoscoping animated movie,
Waking Life, that received a lot of attention at this year's Sundance
Festival, has been given an "R" rating by the Motion
Picture Association of America. Fox secured distribution rights
to the movie, after Sundance, and is opening it in LA and NY this
October with the potential of a wider release in January 2002.
The movie
has been described as a "dream-like" sequence, following
the adventures of a man as he takes a journey that leads him to
many unique encounters.
Here's an
official description of the process:
"Waking
Life, originally shot on digital video with live actors, stars
Wiley Wiggins (Dazed and Confused) along with numerous other Linklater
film alumni and presents a revolutionary approach
to animation by transforming a cast of dozens of live actors into
unique characters, each interpreted and animated by a different
artist...The software allows artists to paint over the digital
footage using a technique of interpolated rotoscoping. Individual
brushstrokes can be stretched smoothly across a range of frames,
giving the animation a unique look."
The reason
for the "R" rating is "for language and some violent
images."

I'd rather jump out of the window, I swear to God." He also
took swipes at Hollywood suits and studios saying at one point,
"I'm fascinated by the studio technique that sort of leaves
you bloodied, beaten and left for dead right before you're supposed
to go out and make a great movie for them."
