Planet of the Apes Falls to Second - Rush Hour 2 Soars
(by digitalmediafx.com) Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes saw a hefty falloff over last week's numbers, but was able to stay in second place at the box office on Friday behind Rush Hour 2. Rush Hour 2 had a massive $22.6 million opening. Meanwhile, Planet of the Apes saw a huge drop of 67% over last Friday, bringing in $8.3 million to barely stay ahead of Disney's The Princess Diaries, which brought in $8.1 million. Jurassic Park 3 finished fourth with $3.5 million.

Digital Media FX will have weekend estimates posted tomorrow morning with final results being posted Tuesday morning.

Fast Food Joints Avoided Tie-ins with Osmosis Jones
(by digitalmediafx.com) USA Today is reporting that fast food joints like McDonalds and Burger King avoided the possibility of any tie in with Osmosis Jones "like salmonella." The reasoning is because the movie focuses on a slob that doesn't take good care of his body and fast food joints don't want to be branded with that type of image.

The gross out factor of the mixed live action and animated movie made it unfavorable for tie-ins in the real world. According to USA Today, "Frank vomits on screen, sports huge pus-filled pimples and has nose emissions the color of pea soup."

Animated Films usually have an easy time at securing deals with fast food joints because of their appeal to kid and family audiences.

Borders Gives Book Away with Snow White DVD Orders
(by digitalmediafx.com) Borders is embarking upon a large promotional campaign for the upcoming Snow White DVD. The national book and music store has announced that it will be giving away an exclusive collectible Snow White book from Disney for those who place a preorder for the DVD at Borders and leave a $10 deposit. The cost for the DVD at Borders will be $19.99.

The two-disc DVD features hours of footage recounting the making of the film, why Walt Disney chose the classic fairytale as the first Disney movie, and a history of Disney -- from the original release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1939 to present day. The DVD is being released October 9, 2001.

News Link of the Day - Japan Falls Under Blockbuster Movie's Spell

According to CNN:

"While the fairytale cartoon Shrek fills movie screens worldwide, Japan is caught under another celluloid spell. Spirited Away, the latest movie from famed animator Hayao Miyazaki, has blown out box office records there since it opened on July 20. The cartoon had the biggest opening weekend in history for a movie in Japan..."
