Beauty and the BeastDisney Changes Beauty and the Beast Rerelease Date
(by digitalmediafx.com) Disney has moved its IMAX rerelease of Beauty and the Beast from March 8, 2002 to January 1, 2002. No reason was given for the change.

"Clearly, New Year's Day has been a lucky date for us, and we are continuing that tradition with Beauty and the Beast," says Dick Cook, chairman of the Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group. "Directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale and producer Don Hahn took this 'tale as old as time' and created a special film, one that has quickly become an audience favorite and the highlight of our Studio's animation renaissance. It looks great on the giant screen and we can't wait to share it with audiences around the world."

On March 30, Digital Media FX published an article titled IMAX Troubles Continue - Can Animation Save It? The article talked about IMAX losses and how it is relying on Disney to help save it through rereleasing animated films to IMAX. Even DreamWorks has hinted that it could possibly release a version of Shrek to IMAX in the future.

Rereleasing Beauty and the Beast next year will be near the film's 10 year anniversary. According to Disney, the remastered film will include a newly-animated song sequence and enhanced imagery that animators spent over a year working on. The new musical sequence features the song "Human Again" by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. It was originally written for the original version of the movie, but was cut after it was storyboarded.

"Human Again" is a festive sequence in which the enchanted characters dream about what they'll do when they change back into their original forms. This marks the first time that Disney has ever animated a new sequence for a previously-released feature.

Beauty and the Beast took in over $350 million dollars at the box office worldwide when it was released in 1991.

Mighty Mouse Saves the... er... CheeseMighty Mouse Endorses Cheese
(by digitalmediafx.com) The classic cartoon character, Mighty Mouse, is back on TV - only this time as a spokesmouse for cheese. Mighty Mouse is now staring in the American Dairy Association's new "Ahh, the power of Cheese" advertising campaign that began running yesterday.

Dairy Management, Inc. states, "Ironically, cartoons are no longer just for kids. As the industry gains mainstream acceptance and recognition as an art form, more comic characters are appearing in advertising and movies targeting people of all ages."

In the new spot, Mighty Mouse is distracted by his uncontrollable desire for cheese as mayhem mounts around him. In an unexpected twist, even this invincible superhero "caves to the crave" for cheese before saving the day.

"We hope our new cheese commercial starring the beloved Mighty Mouse will make viewers smile just like last year's popular 'Election' spot featuring Bob Dole," says Dairy Management Inc. (DMI) Vice President of Cheese Marketing Kevin Burkum. "We think this commercial will strike a chord with many people, because, like Mighty Mouse, three out of four people love cheese so much that nothing can distract them from satisfying their cravings."

Created in 1942, Mighty Mouse appeared in comics, film and television for more than 50 years.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's StoneHarry Potter Movie To Be Given Worldwide Release
(by digitalmediafx.com) Warner Bros. plans on giving Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone a worldwide release, opening it the same day on over 10,000 screens worldwide. Recognizing Harry Potter as a worldwide phenomenon, Warner Bros. plans on giving equal treatment of the movie to as many countries as possible. The move is likely to receive strong acclaim overseas as most overseas markets wait months for a movie to go from the U.S. to another country.

To date, Warner Bros. has been masterfully marketing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone worldwide. Last month, Warner Bros. arranged for over 200 theaters throughout the U.K. and Ireland to show the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie trailer in a continuous loop. Admission was free.

The movie will have a different name overseas. Overseas it will be named Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone instead of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which is the official name of the US release. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is scheduled to open worldwide on November 16, 2001.

Plans for a sequel titled Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets are already moving forward in high gear.

News Link of the Day - Cinar Being Sued by Subsidiary's Former Owners

According to the CBC:

"Cinar Corp. revealed Monday that it is being sued by the former shareholders of Twin Sisters Productions, a company Cinar bought last year.

A children's animation company, Cinar said it was informed last week of the suit, which was filed in New York. The suit alleges misrepresentations relating to earn-out clauses and other terms negotiated during the acquisition of Twin Sisters Productions and Twin Sisters Licensing on February 22, 2000..."
