Animation
/ FX Cheers and Sneers - January 2002
(by
digitalmediafx.com) Here is the list of Digital Media FX's January
2002 Cheers and Sneers for the animation and visual effects industries:
Cheers:
To Nickelodeon for its success with Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius
which has made over $76 million since being released in late December.
Sneers:
To Square USA for trying to blame the failure of Final
Fantasy: The Spirits Within on the fact that it was released
in July 2001 amidst strong box office competition. Final Fantasy
was doomed to fail when filmmakers departed from the strong video
game elements - particularly fantasy elements. The video game
series has always had strong story elements, strong magical elements,
and very colorful visuals. The movie failed to capture these,
even though the animation was impressive.
Cheers:
To Disney for a very impressive Atlantis:
The Lost Empire
DVD. While many studios are starting to cut back on
extras, Disney is setting the pace as a leader in how to make
a good DVD better. It gives new meaning to the words "Disney
DVD". Now if Disney would only stop trying to force trailers
on DVD users versus allowing them to select them as a bonus feature...
Cheers:
To George Lucas for removing N'Sync from Star Wars: Attack
of the Clones.
Sneers:
To George Lucas and gang for thinking it would be a good
idea to add the N'Sync group to Star Wars: Attack of the Clones
in the first place. Lucas needs to learn not to distract from
the story elements (i.e. Jar-Jar Binks). Focus on the story, Lucas,
as it was you who once said that a special effect is only a special
effect.
Cheers:
To DreamWorks and New Line Cinema for the many critic and film
board awards they have won for Shrek and Lord of the
Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
Sneers:
To Disney for poor marketing of Beauty and the Beast:
Special Edition on IMAX screens. The movie has made less money
on more screens than Fantasia 2000 did two years ago.
